The Mistress

The morning light cresting over her is how she greets me at the day’s start.

All smiles, all welcome, all mine.

She’s not my first, not even my current. I’ve never told her that it’d like her to be my last.

She’s coy, mysterious. She is all class, and in a class all her own.

She can be welcoming to strangers. Take heed however, don’t try her temper or they’ll be hell to pay.

Some would call her too hot, if there is such a thing. For me, she’s just right.  Her flare fits her and intrigues me in equal parts.

As we sail through the day, she’s there by my side on Camelback. As its peaks kiss the sky, she kisses me with her sunshine. All the while whispering in soothing tones that it will all be alright because we’re together.

Beauty is how she got my attention, but it’s everything else that draws me back.  There are those more mature (Though those that both value and embody this quality bring up its merits too often). But take note, this one, she is well rounded, astute and knows exactly how to handle herself in situations.

The evening brings us downtown; Adams and Central… As is her way, she draws me close as the sky becomes a glorious canvas of pink, purple and orange. Her eyes are the sunset. Her fingers become the breeze that hold my hand. Night is nearly upon us. And as is my way, when day breaks she knows I will be gone once more. She has come to expect this. I’d like to think she has even grown to accept it.

The instances I’ve left her are innumerable. I long only to return…anytime, every time that I can. A quick evening drive for a visit, sneaking away for a weekend meeting, a hushed and rushed stopover.

My love for her borders on infatuation, but I just can’t make myself stay. Though we tend to remain focused on the benefits of our run and gun relationship, when talk of permanence comes up she laughs because she understands my lies.

As long as she will have me I will continue to go to her, even if for now it can’t be forever.

In my fondest dreams there comes a night, when the moon is at its fullest I won’t have to go away. All the paltry excuses and trivial reasons will no longer tether me to anywhere else.

I swear to you Phoenix, it will be then that I stay with you eternally.
